Gratitude

What are you grateful for?
Do you look for those things in each day?

It’s hard to change our mindset sometimes.
To focus on the gifts that surround us:

Our health,
The beauty of the natural world,
The company of good friends,
Laughter,
Family,
Bounty.

What if we approached each day filled with gratitude for the gift of another day on this earth?
How would we live this day if we knew it was our last?

Would we be kinder to each other?
More appreciative of the little kindnesses shown us?
Would we cherish each interaction we have with a life,
Whether plant or animal?

I want to thank you for joining me on this journey…  I appreciate your company and your ideas. May today find you better than yesterday.  May tomorrow be even better.

Seth Godin has created a Thanksgiving Reader with an invitation to share it with our friends and family as we sit down to celebrate gratitude. Wanna join us?  Tell the others.

Wonder

What does it mean to wonder?
Or to have wonder?
How are those different?

Wonder is awe.
A child on Christmas morning.

Looking into your newborn baby’s eyes.
Patiently trekking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
A lightning storm in the desert.

To wonder is playful, curious.
Open to possibility.
Willing to question; to explore.

Could it be that one is related to the other?
That to wonder fills one with wonder?

Power boat stops dead in the water

Ever been flying along on the top of the water?
Cruising fast
Wind whipping your hair
Then you cut the power?

The water stops you dead
Boat seems to travel backwards for a moment
No forward momentum
Water is an inertia-dampener

Have you ever been flying along on a project?
Making huge strides
Feels effortless
Then suddenly it’s not.

How do you keep your forward momentum when something cuts the power?
Can you restart it yourself?
Or do you need a friend to help?
What if we agreed to help each other restart our engines?

Patience

Patience is planting the seeds and accepting that it will take time for them to grow.

Waiting is poised, foot hovering above the ground, ready to step but afraid to step.

Unsure.

Convenience

What is convenient?
Is it a time-saving device?

What does it mean to trade money for time?

Is it really a trade?
Or do you spend your time making money to buy time?

Convenience is a trickster.
It robs us of doing the hard work.
Of showing up day after day
Doing our work a step at a time
Unsure whether it will work or not.

Each drop compounding slowly
Until one day we see a lake
One that didn’t exist outside our mind.
Made real by inconvenient but optimistic persistence.

The Time I Have

Make the most of the time I have.
We never know how long we have here.

Until it is too late.

This moment.
This place.

These companions.

All can vanish in a blink.
And we are left either wishing we had cherished the time

Or regretting being less than fully present.

What if we think of each moment as never coming again?
What if we live in a way that we have no regrets?

Can we stop to notice the heart-filling beauty of being surrounded by loved ones?
Surrounded by breath-taking trees or sagauros older than us?
Can I count the moments I make a child feel important?
Or comfort a dear friend who has seen all those she loves pass?
On my death bed will I thank God for the beauty bestowed on me and the heart riches I can claim?

Reflections

Writing by candlelight. Haven’t done this since Tennessee.
Oh how I loved getting up before dawn. Before the kids were up.
Time to myself while the world was quiet.
Only me, the candle, my rocking chair, and the bank of plate glass windows, and the dark.
I watched dawn creep over the green hills and the vast lawn behind our apartments.

A new day.
Born of silence.
Made strong by reflection — me and my candle.
It’s light reflecting off the dark windows.
Witnessing the birth of a new day.
One that promised to be different.
