In his monumental book, The Mythical Man-Month, Fred Brooks devoted a chapter to silver bullets. He called this essay, which is still discussed and relevant today, "No Silver Bullets: Essence and Accidents of Software Engineering." Dealing with complexity cannot yield simple solutions. One of my favorite phrases as a UNIX computer programmer in the 80's and 90's was "there are no silver bullets." We were saying that at Bell Labs before Fred published his work... Or was it after?
It goes hand in hand with my other programming design approach, KISS (keep it simple stupid).
All this to say, going back to my earlier post about simple solutions to climate change, there are no simple solutions to complex problems. Check out this well-constructed argument by WIRED magazine about why no-till farming is not the answer. It just can't be that simple. Maybe it's part of the answer. But Big Ag is surely not. And yes there is a simple solution.... Don't drive. Don't fly. Stop using plastic. Can we do the difficult work of re-inventing the industries based on over-consumption of fossil fuels? Do fossil fuels have any role in the future you can envision? What can you do?
